Notes
Drawn in Brooklyn, NY, Journal, 1923, April 14, from aboard Richard Parmenter's schooner the
Isabella Parmenter. Mrs. Parmenter was called "Belle." ED note: "I thought probably I would make a
composition from it and make a composition in oil from a sketch. This is the sketch but I never made the
other one. The notations as to what things are I would do with guidance as to the color value relationships
and identification of forms, i.e., buildings, barges, chimneys, which, without wanting to take the time to make
self-explanatory, to be better done, I resorted to print to identify shapes that might not be recalled by me
when I was to make the composition in oil, perhaps two years thereafter." Noted at lower right is "25 x 30"
which may be the projected size of the oil.
