Notes: Painted in Wellfleet, MA and New York, NY. Portrait is a copy of an 18th century original, of a Revolutionary Was Sheriff of Boston, ancestor of Margaret Hutchins. ED even painted the bullet hole through the coat. Journal 7 May 1952 "Met Margaret Hutchins in Village. visit. will (may) do copy of portrait @ $1600= next winter." 1953: May 22 "to see Greenleaf portrait." (journal).

1956: February 23 "stretched Margaret's 40/50 of the Sheriff.", March 21 took it to ABBE films, 22 "Strandeedrew 40/50 & took it to studio", 23 began mixing for 40/50, 31 "began 40/50 of Sheriff Greenleaf. (good start).", 4, 11, 13, 16 "re-stretched 40/50 ", 18, 25, 28, 30, May 2, 9, 14, 18, 21, 26, June 21, 22, 23, 25, 28, 29, 30, July 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 18, 19, 20, 21,

July 22 "fini 4/50 of Sheriff.", 28 painted on it again for last time, 30 "sent portrait to Margaret Hutchins).

Reverse, on the stretcher, "light it from above at R of the middle on angle of incidence of 35 degrees. 50 sittings NYC and Wellfleet for Margaret Hutchins."
