Notes: Painted in Wellfleet, MA and New York, NY. While ED was abroad Frances Dickinson (herself a painter), roughed in the portrait as a help to him. ED began painting August 19, 20, 21,23, 29, September 2, 4, 5, 6, 8, 24, 25, 30, October 1, 2, 3, 6, 7 "when I got up this morning, one eye of the portrait was looking one way; the the other, the other. Bad. OK [he fixed it]", 8, 9, 13, 14, 15, 16, 20, 21, 22 "fini portrait", December 15, portrait taken to Lowy". 1953, January 16, Dudley portrait considered very succesful and he paid $1200 for it.

To EHS & AWS, September 17, 1952, the Dudley portrait is 3/5 done. To AWS, October 22, 1952, Mr. Dudley's head is exactly life-size."

This painting was commissioned by the law firm of which Ansley W. Sawyer was a partner. It was done from a photograph after the death of Mr. Dudley.
