Notes
Painted in New York, NY, January 16, 1949 (To Tibi, January 22, 1949; he made a "try" at painting a 19th century dress, modeled by a student, "last Sunday"). The painting was never completed. The "costume" is a dress of heavy grey satin with feathers which belonged to ED's grandmother, Marie Antoinette Carter. It was given to him in Sheldrake, September 22, 1939, but it remained at Tibi's until December 1948. October 3 & 5, 1939 he had it photographed on a model, Tyrrel (journal). HDB wore it to an Art Students League Ball April 22, 1949, (to Tibi, 1 May 1949).
