Drawn August 8 (journal), aboard the M/V Hollandia off Gallipoli, Turkey in the Dardanelles. "Gallipoli" inscriptions refer to World War I failed Allied campaign of 1915 to gain control of the Dardanelles. "Dur yol cu" is the beginning of a Turkish poem written in immense letters of white stone in honor of those who fell for their country. It means "stop traveler" or "stop passer-by." Above the Turkish landscape is a drawing of drapery presumably taken from Ingres. [ It is possible that the drawing "Second Crusade's Difficulty" is on the reverse of this work rather than "Alicante." Inscription said to be "2nd Crusade in difficulties here."]
