Notes
Drawn in Wellfleet, MA, January, for "Self Portrait in Uniform." ED note: "The drawing was made
when the rendering of the bugle from nature was undertaken. Indeed, before the painting of the bugle
actually started, which work was long after the head had been done and the coat, too. This drawing with its
imperfectness is one of the very few used working drawings I have ever made. I recall not feeling capable
of doing as well as I could on the bugle unless I made a little drawing of it in one position because it was
done slung over my own shoulder in a mirror, and it might not stay twice the same because the shoulder
holding it was moving around to paint the picture. I'll bet I haven't made 25 working drawings in my life as
purely exemplifying what's meant by `working drawings' as much as this one."
