Notes

Painted in Provincetown, MA. Identified on reverse as a scene from Dostoevski's "The Idiot." Marie, a consumptive girl of twenty, is seduced by a stranger with whom she goes away for a week. He abandons her and she returns to her village sick, dirty and in rags. Her mother receives her with anger and contempt. Marie lies on the ground at her mother's feet while the villagers revile and abuse her.
