Notes

Painted in New York, NY, February 12, 13, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 24, 27, 29, March 1, 2, 3, 5, 7 "(still life)", 9, 12, 14, 16, October 17, 21, 22, 28, 30, November 11, (journal). CC was a student then an artist. Carpet by her head belonged to ED's grandfather, Walter Steuben Carter. CC's notes on posing: "There were 20 sittings, each 3 or 4 hours . . . When I was a student of his, . . . ED said that . . . from a certain angle my head reminded him of a Veronese and asked if I would sit for him. He began 12 February and the last sitting was 15 March. . . . we discussed what [blouse] I would wear. He finally decided upon a mauve blouse which he provided. And he wanted me to wear my my hair loose. Then he arranged the set-up so that I should be in a horizontal position on a couch which had a Persian carpet arranged over it. . . . Most of the Persian rug was painted in the afternoons when I was absent."
