Notes

Painted in Wellfleet, MA, January 25, 26, 27, 28, 29, 30, 31, February 1, 2, 5, 6, "[24/29 of Sheldrake ('July 4th') in much better shape.]", 7 (rose), 14 (rose), 15 (rose), 16 (journal), in the east room of the house. COH: "So, this piece was done from another one. I had the other one before me when I did this.""I took two canvases, put them together, and added the rose which was done from nature (it was a blue one), and I added the balloon, . . .And . . . I added this right hand section.""The reason I put in the balloon was just a little capriciousness. . . . When I was five, . . . I had been taken . . . [to] a recreation park, and once a year there was a balloon ascension there. . . . The balloon ascension I associaed with that lake, . . . I wanted something in, and I like a balloon." Asked why he painted the rose blue, "I suppose I thought it would look better." 165, 166, 167.
