Notes
Painted in Buffalo, NY, at the Sawyers', 770 West Ferry St. , in backyard under an apple tree (journal May 17). Journal 11 May, says he waiting for good weather to do Brenda. Painted May 13, 14, 17, 19, 24, 25, 26 ; on May 31 delivered the canvas (journal). Brenda was the daughter of Dr. A.W. Jacobsen who without fee cared for Helen and Constant during long illnesses in the winter of 1938-1939. Brenda's reminiscence: "I sat in a straight chair . . . and I wore my best dress. He let me read a book while I posed - I was not sleeping, just absorbed in my book. We had four or five outdoor sessions, and he did not allow me to see the painting in progress. He was very autocratic, I recall."Provenance
