Notes

Painted in Provincetown, MA in fall of 1913. ED studio photograph. Hawthorne admired the piece and at his suggestion ED traded it to him for a Hawthorne nude of Mayme Noons. The ED painting hung in the Hawthorne living room at One Miller Hill Road. ED notes: "The subject is a scene in a dance hall where two people are dancing on a low platform. At the right a hunchback waiter is shown winding up an old His Master's Voice R.C.A. record player. The Victrola is seen to be playing from a page of notes set on a fiddle stand." Titled "Bar Room" on a 1920s list in back of 1918 journal.
