Begun in Buffalo, NY, in 1922 as seen in photo of ED with it. Painting resumed 1931, February 12, 13, 14, 16, 17, 18, 19, 20, 21, (tried to paint still life), 22, 23 (drapery), 26 (drapery), 27 (drapery), 28 (drapery), March 2, 3, 10, 11, 13, 24, 26, 28 "painted (out) Esther" but ED then scraped face and cut piece down from 30 x 25". Letters to FD; February 21, The head of E continues well, painted on it this AM., February 22, "Painted on Esther's portrait this AM drew in a piece of drapery back of her head to the left. Going to give it one of my new systematic drapery 'goes' - hoping for results", February 23 "Just finished a 3 hr go on a green drapery back of the head. I held myself to it but the push of time is a tough one for me - these are not the disciplines for me; I am incapable of them if they were. It doesn't follow hat certain qualities carry other more customary ones with them"."Painted this PM on drapery - " February 24 "Finished forehead of Esther.", February 26 "PM drapery", February 27 "Drapery this Am", February 28 "Finished the drap [sic] this AM" , March 10 ". . . painted on Esther's portrait this Am. . . The head of Esther for the 1st time seems to belong to the blue curtains. . . "", March 12 "working on 25/30 of Esther", March 27 "painted on Esther's head.", March 30 "Last sitting on Esther's portrait" "I painted out the head." FD note: "He continued to work on the drapery and later he cut the canvas down to a smaller size with the hope that some portion of it might be saved."
